Social Media (Audience Research)

This is Redbone Official Facebook page founded by Patrick Vegas which is one of the old band members. This is the only social network the band has as they are old they may not have taken advantage of all of the new technology available. This does give us more of an idea on what kind of audience listens and enjoys this music as we can see who likes the page to see what else they like but also some more personal information such as age and gender.

Focus Group (Audience Research)

We decided to do a  focus group on which idea we should choose for our video ending. We first let the group listen to the song, and then gave them 3 choose on how our music video should end. They then put their hands up to which idea they think is the best.

Similar Artists (Audience Research)

I have gone onto amazon and found our track on the market and decided to find what other people who have bought this music, but also see what else they have bought or enjoy. Similar artists seem to be people such as David Bowie which is shown in the screenshot above. Other genre people seem to enjoy is Motown which is also shown in the screenshot above. This could imply that the people that listen to the track we are using is listened to by people who enjoy music from the era of 1970. This now gives us a good idea on what sought of music video we should do, as they should be similar themed to other music videos from that era.

Story Idea

From analysing the song lyrics, it is very obvious what the theme of the song is love, so we have tried to add this theme to our music video. Our idea is to have a Actor/Singer to have a journey to the beach to meet his love. We will film his whole journey there but also from her point of view as she waits for him.

Another idea is the same general storyline but have some kind of twist of the end, such as: instead of meeting the girl implying to the audience that she is his love, instead the women could be introducing him to another guy then implying that he is his love.

Or finally we would have the same story until the end when instead of him meeting the women he instead sees her walking off with another man. This would be a good way of contrasting against the overall song as it would be the opposite to the song lyrics.

Obstructed Wipe Transition

Obstructed wipe transition uses an object to hide the transition between shots. In our example we used a simple pillar to cut from James walking through one door and then cutting to him coming from outside the room. I would like to use this technique in our music video but trying to cut out some objects in After effects could be difficult.

Stop Motion Experiment

I have been thinking about different things I could use in my final media product. I have done a course in Stop Motion Animation and I think that it would look good if it was used. If it was used we would have to make sure that it is done well, other wise we would risk it looking bad. The video above is inspiring as it is is entirely shot in Stop Motion, and I feel like it works well.

Whip pan transition

This is my attempt of a whip pan. I used Final Cut Pro to create this effect by simply panning fast with the camera and using a directional blur to cut between both shots. I could use the to change locations quickly but it would look like an invisible transition.

After Effects Transition

I having been using After Effects to create some custom transitions and here is one of my results. I could display the artist name or song on the opening of the video. I have a screenshot below of the After effects document.

Transition Ideas

We have been looking at invisible transitions and we think we would like to incorporate into our music. We will do some experiments trying out these different techniques and trying to achieve a similar effect as seen in the video above.

Music Video Analysis

Artist: Rittz
Genre of music: Rap
Who produced/directed it: Strange Music Inc
When was it created: 3rd September 2014
Record company: Seven
Mise en scene: This video is set in what we believe to be Rittz house as we see him waking up inside. We believe that a party would have happened the night before because the camera slowly tracks towards him, but also passing many props such as many cans and empty bottles which implies their was a party and then focuses onto Rittz which could be seen as depth of field as it first focused on the bottles implying to the audience the story and then focuses onto the main character/artist which is Rittz. The overall lighting is quite dark in the flashbacks as we are supposed to think it is late at night, but when it cuts back to him being awake in the morning the light changes to what we are supposed to think of artificial light from outside showing the time has changed helping to understand it is a flashback. The colour palette is quite vibrant and bright from all the drinks and overall setting of the video.
Camera techniques: The camera didn't really use a wide range of shots just mostly mid and long shots. Their is some interesting angles such as low angle shots showing people drinking and partying, but also showing visual hierarchy with the artist being the dominant figure.
Editing techniques: The cut rate of the video varies from a cut every 3 seconds to 5 cuts every second. This is supposed to represent him remembering different parts of the night. A lot of the video is in slow motion when filming people dancing, but when the artist is singing with his music it goes back to regular speed. The colours sometimes gets inverted and flickers continuing to show he is flashing back to the night before.

Artist: Imagine Dragons
Genre of music: Alternative Rock
Who Produced/directed it: Matt Eastin and Corey Fox/KIDinaKORNER
When was it created: 13th November 2013
Record Company: Interscope Records
Mise en scene: The video is based in 1969, for the first moon landing. We first see the time been set right at the start of the video from some simple clothing a prop use. The overall dress code with the women in cardigans and dresses with the men in suits and hats. Also the stereotypical glasses and haircuts are also from the same time. We then get further clarification about it been based on the first moon landing as we see something on the old fashioned TV. We then see the band members coming from different backgrounds/locations to meet up in the space centre. It then shows the set similar to the moon implying to the audience they think the moon landing was fake and making a joke out of it by doing silly camera mistakes such as having the boom mic in shot.
Camera Techniques: Their is a range of camera shots used such as a long shot to show big groups of people like at the start of the video or to show the set of the moon and the multiple cameras. Also use of mid shots when we first see each band member just showing the upper body. But also close ups to show the band getting into their space gear but also on some of the set. Their is lots of camera movement such as use of tracks, but also pans. We see use of low and high angle shots throughout the video showing some visual hierarchy between the characters with the band been most important.
Editing Techniques: The cut rate of the video is quite consistent and uses a range of transitions, such as zoom out and also a swipe from right to left which was following a jeep. Also has use of effects like a security camera template making us believe that they are being watch from inside the building.

Video starts with a series of close ups showing multiple props. The lighting is very dark only showing very specific objects, and also shows a silhouette around the first character which we now assume to be the main character. It then cuts to another scene of a small girl brushing around animal pens. This is shown a long shot highlighting what the character is doing meaning that is may be important to the storyline of the video.Use of slow motion to show specific martial arts scenes such as high jumps and rotations.Close ups and mid shots showing tigers fighting and playing highlighting to the audience they are a significant part of the story. Very the beat of the song starts to speed up it cuts to specific scenes of the story which is martial arts which also have slow motion.
    Artist: Rudimental
    Genre of music: House/DnB
Who Produced/directed it: Campbell Beaton and Tiernan Hanby
When was it created: 5th July 2013
    Record Company: Asylum Records
Mise en scene: The video is set in Thailand and we can tell this from some of the cultural features in the video, such as the monks and temples. The costume is similar to the set of the video in keeping with Thai theme, with use of robes. It also has a lot of nature throughout the video with multiple shots of the surrounding areas and also tigers which seems to be a main theme throughout the video.
Camera Techniques: Use of long shots showing an establishing shot
    Editing Techniques:

    Artist: Kiesza
    Genre of Music: Deep House
    Who produced/directed it?:Kiesza herself
    When was it created/released?: April 11, 2014
Record Company: Afuni's independent label Lokal Legend
Mise En Scene: This music video is one long take, with real life going on in the background! At the start of the music video, the artist gets out of a taxi, and walks along with the beat of the music. She then starts dancing with someone on the street. The song then progresses and the artist then moves along to a group of female dancers. It continues like this, moving from different sides of the street and dancing her way up the street with different people. The dancing goes along with the beat and tempo of the music. At the end of the video she gets back into the same type of taxi that she got out of at the beginning.
Camera Techniques: The whole music video consists of one long shot, that pans and track with the artist as they dance their way down the street.
Edit Techniques: The only editing is lip sync and at the beginning the name of the song appears in the middle of the screen.
Performance: This music video consists of Dancing, Lip Sync Singing to the camera.
Representation of the Artist: This music video doesn't rely on stereotypes and I feel like the overall vibe of the music video is positive.
Where might this video be shown?: This music video is on YouTube on the record companies own channel. It could also be shown on music stations on TV, for example, MTV or 4Music.

    Song Choice

We have decided on a song called Come and get your love by Redbone. We have also over cranked the song ready for our performs to start practicing and I did this by using Final Cut shown in the screenshot below.

Hey (hey) What's the matter with your head? yeah...
Hey (hey) What's the matter with your mind and all your sighing?
    And-a ooh-ohh
Hey (hey) Nothin's a matter with your head, baby, find it
    Come on and find it
Hell, with it, baby, 'cause you're fine and you're mine
    And you look so divine

    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love

Hey (hey) What's the matter with your feel right?
    Don't you feel right, baby?
Hey, oh, yeah, get it from the main vine, alright
I said-a find it, find it, darling, love it
    If you like it, yeah-eh
Hey (hey) It's your business if you want some
Take some, get it together, baby

    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love

Come and get your love, come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love, come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love, come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love, come and get your love
Come and get your love, now

    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love
    Come and get your love

    Come and get your love

Hey (hey) What's the matter with your feel right?
    Don't you feel right, baby?
Hey, oh, yeah, get it from the main vine, alright
